“Esther and Starting a Business After 50: Courage When You Feel Unqualified”

There’s a reason Esther’s story has endured for generations.

She didn’t volunteer for the spotlight.
She didn’t campaign for leadership.
She didn’t feel powerful.

She was chosen.

And when the moment came that could change everything, she was terrified.

“Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” — Esther 4:14

Those words weren’t soft encouragement.
They were a call to courage.

Esther had a decision to make:
Stay silent and safe
Or step forward and risk everything.

She fasted.
She prayed.
And then she went.

Not because she felt ready.
But because she knew she was called.

The Business Parallel

Many women wait until they feel confident before they act.

They wait until:
• The website is perfect
• The pricing feels comfortable
• The portfolio is bigger
• The fear disappears

But calling rarely waits for comfort.

There was a moment in my own life when I had to decide whether I would step forward or stay where things felt predictable.

After more than 25 years running a cleaning business, and after walking through a season of physical injury that forced me to slow down, I found myself asking God what was next.

Balloon Jubilee was not part o f some long-term master plan.

It was a nudge.

A moment at my son’s graduation party.
A simple balloon arch.
A stirring in my spirit that whispered,
“This is the next chapter.”

I was 54.
Not 24.
Not starting from scratch with endless energy.
Starting from experience, faith, and a willingness to say yes.

I did not feel like an expert.
I did not feel fully prepared.
I did not have a large portfolio.

But I felt called.

And sometimes obedience looks like stepping into something that feels too big, too new, or too late.

For the Woman in Midlife

If you are 45, 56, 62, or beyond and you feel a stirring…

Pay attention.

Esther didn’t choose her moment.
She responded to it.

You may not be standing before a king,
but you might be standing before:

• A new business idea
• A financial rebuilding season
• A creative calling
• A leadership opportunity
• A dream you thought had expired

Here is the truth:

God does not waste experience.
He repurposes it.

Your years were not a delay.
They were preparation.

Your maturity is not a disadvantage.
It is depth.

You are not too late.
You are seasoned.

And maybe — just maybe —
this season of building,
this season of courage,
this season of trusting God for provision —

is your “such a time as this.”

The Encouragement

If you feel God nudging you toward something bigger than your comfort zone —

Go to Him first.
Pray.
Seek clarity.

And then step.

You do not need to feel powerful.
You need to be willing.

Esther didn’t feel ready.
She felt responsible.

And obedience opened the door.

“For such a time as this” is not about age.
It’s about alignment.

And if He placed something in your heart,
He has already gone before you.

As I continue building Balloon Jubilee here in Northeast Ohio , I often think about Esther’s courage. Starting a balloon décor business in midlife wasn’t something I had planned — but it became my “such a time as this.”
